Sand in Suldal

Sand is the administrative centre of Suldal municipality, and has 1100 inhabitants. The National Tourist Route Ryfylke passes through Sand. The old village, beautifully situated on the Sandsfjord, has preserved much of its historic character, with clusters of charming, white wooden houses.

At Sand you will find a cultural centre, a salmon studio at Sandsfossen falls, the main facility of Ryfylke Museum in Nesasjøhuset, a good selection of shops, a hotel, cabins for hire, a gallery and popular cafés. Suldalslågen river, renowned amongst anglers for its salmon, empties its waters into the Sandsfjord just by the hotel, which sits at the end of the Sand’s main street. The church has an historic cemetery, where you will also see some English names, of aristocratic families that discovered Suldal in the 19th century, bought fishing rights on the river and returned every year.

Sand has excellent communications, with express boats calling daily and frequent bus services. There is also a Tourist Information office and a guest harbour. Every year Sand hosts Ryfylke Days, a traditional market with activities for the whole family, as well as the popular Møgedals Market at Bergekrossen. Every other year a colourful historical play is performed.
